Are tattoos on visitors acceptable in India?

I am a citizen of the US and traveling to India on business. I have tattoos on my arms (wrist & upper arm....both just designs but one resembling a cross) and have received mixed information in regards to if it is frowned upon or not to show tattoos in India (especially being a female). I do not want to offend anyone, yet, I do not want to go out of my way to cover up when it is not necessary.
